The Rainbow Path to the Sky: A Legend of Deer and Little Turtle

The denizens of the wild were, it must be stated, greatly distressed and profoundly affronted by the artifices wrought by the Twin-Made-of-Fire. They observed the exceedingly fortunate circumstances enjoyed by Little Turtle, she who devoted the greater part of her temporal existence to the maintenance of the celestial sphere. Furthermore, she invariably attended the Grand Council within the Black Cloud, that august assembly of the fontanels, meres, rivulets, and lacustrine expanses.

It so happened that Deer, upon a certain occasion, addressed Rainbow, importuning him thus: 'Convey me hence, up to the celestial sphere, for I have a pressing desire to behold Little Turtle'. Rainbow, however, evinced a reluctance to accede to Deer's request at that juncture, deeming it prudent to first deliberate with the Thunder concerning the affair. He thus responded: 'Present thyself before me in the depths of winter, when I repose upon the mountain adjacent to the lake. At that time, I shall conduct thee forthwith to the abode of Little Turtle'.

Throughout the entirety of winter, the Hart maintained a vigilant vigil, anticipating the return of the celestial Bow; yet, alas, the Bow did not grace the firmament with its presence. Upon the advent of summer, when the Bow at length materialised, the Hart did remonstrate, declaring, 'I did tarry for thee throughout the winter season upon the mountainous terrain proximate to the lacustrine expanse; thou didst fail to appear. Wherefore didst thou perpetrate this deception upon me?' Whereupon the Bow did respond, 'When thou dost observe me amidst the ethereal mists that doth enshroud the lake, approach thou unto me; whereupon thou shalt be permitted to ascend. I shall convey thee aloft unto the abode of the diminutive Tortoise, which doth reside within the celestial sphere.'

Upon a certain day, a dense and ponderous fog didst encroach, advancing in formidable banks and corpulent masses o'er the expanse of the lake. The deer, stationed upon the eminence proximate to the lake's edge, didst await, their gaze fixed in anticipation of the Rainbow's arrival. Whenas the Rainbow didst cast forth a resplendent arc from the lake unto the hill, a luminescent and radiant effulgence didst emanate, enveloping the deer in its splendor. A direct thoroughfare, adorned with a panoply of hues, lay manifested before the deer, leading through a forest of peculiar aspect. Whereupon the Rainbow didst proclaim, 'Pursue the beauteous path through yonder singular woods.'

Verily, this very Deer it was. The beauteous thoroughfare did conduct one to the abode of the diminutive Turtle in the celestial sphere, and Deer did traverse the firmament in every direction withal.

When the Great Council convened, Bear declared, 'Pray, where is Deer? Deer hath not yet presented himself to the Council'. Whereupon, Hawk took flight, circumnavigating the vicinity in search of Deer, yet Hawk's efforts proved fruitless, and Deer remained undiscovered in the aerial domain. Subsequently, Wolf scoured the entirety of the woodlands, but Deer eluded detection within the sylvan confines. As Little Turtle emerged from the Black Cloud, wherein resided the streams, the lakes, and the ponds, Bear proclaimed, 'Deer hath not yet graced the Council with his presence. Wherefore doth Deer tarry? No Council may proceed in Deer's absence'. Little Turtle responded, 'Deer resides in the celestial sphere. Rainbow, in her munificence, hath fashioned a resplendent pathway, adorned with the entirety of her chromatic spectrum, facilitating Deer's ascent'.

The Council, gazing heavenward, beheld Deer traversing the celestial sphere. Subsequently, Little Turtle revealed unto the Council a resplendent pathway fashioned expressly for Deer. With the exception of Mud Turtle, the entirety of the animal kingdom availed themselves of this beauteous avenue, which conducted them aloft into the firmament. There, they persist to this very day, observable in their aerial peregrinations and celestial coursings.
