The Frogs in the Moon: A Lillooet Folk Tale

The tree Frog sisters possessed a dwelling situated within the confines of the swamp, wherein they resided in amicable concord. At no great distance hence, a coterie of individuals maintained their abode in a separate habitation, amongst whom were numbered Snake and Beaver, intimate companions of estimable mien, both harbouring inclinations toward matrimony with the aforementioned Frog maidens.

It befell, upon a certain night, that Snake did venture forth unto the abode of Frog. The maidens were then ensconced in their beds. He did insinuate himself into the chamber of one, and upon her countenance did he place his appendage. She did awaken, and did inquire as to his identity. He proclaimed himself to be Snake. Upon learning this, she declared that she would not consent to matrimony with him, and bade him depart forthwith. She did utter disparaging epithets, such as 'slimy fellow' and 'small eyes,' and others of a similar nature. Snake, thus rebuffed, did return and recount his misadventure unto Beaver.

On the subsequent night, Beaver did venture forth to the abode of Frog. He did, furthermore, insinuate himself into the bedchamber, sharing the bedding with one of the young females, upon whose countenance he did place his appendage. The maiden, thus roused from her slumber, did become cognisant of his identity, whereupon she did vehemently demand his departure. She did subject him to a barrage of epithets, such as 'short legs', 'big belly', 'big butt', and sundry others of similar import. Beaver, thus wounded in his sensibilities, did return homewards and commence to weep. His paterfamilias, observing his distress, did inquire as to the cause thereof, to which Beaver did duly recount the events. The father did proffer the observation, 'That is of no consequence. Do not weep. Excessive precipitation will ensue should you do so'. Notwithstanding, Beaver did retort, 'I shall, however, weep'.

The aqueous element did now flow in a consistent and regulated rill. The Frogs, forthwith, did betake themselves hence, swimming down the aforementioned rill until they arrived at a gyre of considerable force. This gyre did engulf them, and they were conveyed downwards to the abode of Luna. The Moon did extend an invitation for them to avail themselves of the warmth of the hearth. Yet they demurred, declaring, 'Nay, we possess no inclination to repose ourselves by the fire. We desire to be situated yonder,' and did gesticulate in the direction of the Moon himself. He enquired, gesturing towards his nether extremities, 'Here, perchance?' To which they responded in the negative. Whereupon he indicated sundry portions of his corporeal form in succession. Yet none did find favour in their discerning eyes, until such time as he did indicate his brow. When he queried, 'Will ye seat yourselves here?' directing his digit towards his brow, they did, with a unanimous clamour, exclaim 'Aye!' and did leap onto his visage. This action did, alas, mar his erstwhile comely appearance. The Frog sisters remain, to this very day, discernible upon the countenance of Luna.
